As of April 4, 2025, the situation in Ukraine remains tense. Russian forces continue active hostilities on several fronts, particularly in the Pokrovsk, Toretsk, and Kursk directions. Ukrainian defense forces are firmly holding their positions, repelling numerous enemy attacks. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving peace continue, although significant progress has yet to be made.

Frontline Situation According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 216 combat clashes occurred over the past day. The most intense enemy activity was recorded in the following directions:

  • Pokrovsk direction: 80 attacks were recorded in the areas of Panteleimonivka, Sukha Balka, Shevchenko, Vodiane Druhe, Yelyzavetivka, Promin, Zelene, Novyi Trud, Kotlyne, Udachne, Kotliarivka, Uspenivka, and Andriivka.
  • Toretsk direction: 28 assaults were carried out in the areas of Toretsk, Ozarianivka, Dyliivka, Krymske, and Leonidivka.
  • Kursk direction: Ukrainian forces repelled 28 enemy attacks. The enemy conducted 343 artillery shellings (including five from multiple launch rocket systems) and carried out 20 airstrikes, dropping 31 guided bombs.
  • Kramatorsk direction: Six assaults took place near Chasiv Yar, Novomarkove, Stupochky, and Predtechyne.
  • Lyman direction: Russian troops launched 10 attacks near Novoe and Zelena Dolyna; three battles are still ongoing.

Russian Losses As of April 3, 2025, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported the following Russian losses:

  • Personnel — approximately 919,570 (+1,390 in the past day);
  • Tanks — 10,521 (+6);
  • Armored combat vehicles — 21,902 (+22);
  • Artillery systems — 25,625 (+49);
  • MLRS — 1,348 (+1);
  • Air defense systems — 1,123;
  • Aircraft — 370;
  • Helicopters — 335;
  • UAVs (operational-tactical level) — 31,597 (+92);
  • Cruise missiles — 3,123;
  • Warships/boats — 28;
  • Submarines — 1;
  • Vehicles and fuel tanks — 42,775 (+88).

Ukrainian Gains & Targeted Strikes

  • On the Lyman front, the 66th Separate Mechanized Brigade reportedly eliminated over 1,500 Russian troops in one month.
  • In the Kursk direction, the 103rd Territorial Defense Brigade destroyed a Russian Grad MLRS, a tank, and a howitzer.
  • In occupied Melitopol, a vehicle carrying Kadyrov’s forces exploded on April 3.

Diplomatic Initiatives & Negotiations The international community is intensifying pressure on Russia to move toward peace in Ukraine. At a NATO foreign ministers meeting, Secretary General Mark Rutte stressed that Russia must make the next step. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that President Donald Trump would not tolerate further stalling by Vladimir Putin. France and the UK dispatched military officials to Kyiv to discuss possible deployment of peacekeepers following a ceasefire. ISW analysts warned that Russia might exploit a truce to regroup its forces.

International Military & Financial Support NATO allies have pledged over €20 billion in military aid to Ukraine in Q1 2025. Germany announced an additional €3 billion in military assistance. The IMF completed another review of Ukraine’s Extended Fund Facility program, unlocking a $400 million disbursement. The U.S. Senate is deliberating a new support package for Ukraine.

Humanitarian Situation in Ukraine A drone strike in Kharkiv on April 3 killed five people and injured 32. Explosions were reported in Dnipro on the night of April 4, damaging critical infrastructure. The UN called on both sides to adhere to international humanitarian law. The UNITED24 platform, in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy, launched a major fundraising campaign for demining efforts in three Ukrainian regions.

Domestic Situation in Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy outlined Ukraine’s “red lines” for peace talks: refusal to recognize occupied territories and rejection of army size reductions. The Cabinet is working on updating military records, and the Ministry of Economy reported a 2.3% GDP growth in Q1 2025. The IMF also approved a $400 million disbursement to support Ukraine’s budget.
